The man, Jose N. Sierra, 19, was attacked about 1:15 a.m. while standing at the southbound platform of the N train station at 31st Street and Broadway in Astoria, the police said.

Mr. Sierra, who lived on Bryant Avenue, in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, staggered down a few steps and collapsed in the station’s mezzanine, near the clerk’s booth, according to the police.

The shooting happened above a bustling stretch of Broadway, near several bars and restaurants that stay open late.

Patrons at some of them told detectives that they heard at least one shot, then saw a group of four or five men run from the station, a Police Department spokesman said. The witnesses were unable to provide a detailed description of the men, the spokesman said.

As of late yesterday, the police had not made any arrests.

People who knew Mr. Sierra said h came from Mexico and worked long hours at a Greek restaurant in Queens.

They said he was calm and avoided trouble.

“He never had any problems with anyone around here,” said Jose Pizarro, a neighbor.

Another neighbor, Veralmino Castro, who had known Mr. Sierra for a few months, said: “He was a hard worker. It’s a tragedy. He was just starting out in life.”
